The following demo uses the power of JavaScript to convert an image file provided by the user into ASCII art. Image processing is done completely in the browser, leveraging the HTML5 Canvas API and Typed Arrays.
Popular conversion programs such as jp2a only assign a single value to each pixel and maps it to a single glyph, which reduces detail because the image must be shrunk down so 1px = 1glyph. Mine composites a bitmap of each glyph of a given character set over a small region of the image, and determines which one is the most similar. This is slower, but it yields crisper visual results.
